Terrible Twos Birthday Party
When my friend Lauren asked me to help decorate her daughter’s birthday party, I couldn’t have been more excited! My husband and I have known Lauren and her husband Jason for over 10 years and have witnessed many milestones in their lives. One of their happiest moments was the arrival of their daughter Evelyn after struggling with infertility. Watching little Evie grow and bring so much joy to her parents’ lives has been such a heart-warming experience and I wanted to make sure her second birthday was just as memorable as her first.
Lauren decided on a Terrible Twos Monster theme. When we looked for monster parties on Pinterest, all we could find was monster trucks and primary colored monster decorations. Certainly not fitting for a two year old who loves pink and collects purses! Lauren found this Terrible Twos Invitation Set and thought it was a perfect fit for the cutesy vibe she was after. We stuck with a light pink and turquoise color scheme to match the invitation.
I used images from the invitation to design the “Terribly Terrific Twos” banner. I chose complimentary printed paper from Hobby Lobby for the banner and used foam adhesive dots and glitter cardstock to make the letters pop. I also made fun food labels to match the toddler (and adult!) friendly food catered from Homeroom Mac & Cheese. I used my Cricut Explore to design and cut out everything.
At the center of the dessert table was the cutest monster cake and cupcakes made by Melody from Sweet Condesa Pastries. I just loved how she kept the monster looking so cheerful with fun, shaggy texture, eyelashes and gold, glittery horns! I’m gluten-free but party guests reported the funfetti cake was super buttery and delicious!
Aside from the cake and cupcakes, everyone kept eyeballing the “frights krispie treats” (rice krispie treats) me and Lauren made inspired by One Little Project. We popped them on coordinating paper straws (similar) and arranged them on a grass drying rack before the party guests arrived. Such an simple treat with big impact!
Other fun DIY projects included monster plastic cups (not pictured), tissue paper monsters, a monster pom pom garland, and a Monster Mash Up felt board where kids could design their own monsters. Since the party was held on Mother’s Day, Lauren put together little goodie bags for all the moms who came. It was such a thoughtful gesture!
My absolute favorite DIY project? Making this toddler-sized monster piñata inspired by the invitation! It took me forever (no joke!) to make, but I just LOVE how it turned out. I’m still not over it!
At first, Lauren was unsure of having a piñata (teaching toddlers how to swing bats = no bueno), but warmed up to the idea after her mom suggested a pull string piñata. (Side note: Lauren’s mom is an extremely crafty lady and had made many piñatas for her themed birthdays growing up.) The toddlers took turns pulling the ribbons on the bottom of the piñata, until the right one released all the goodies. They were puzzled at first until they realized they could take home all of the toys and treats in their googly eye goodie bags. Evie was clever enough to pick all the markers that matched her rainbow dress! Too cute!
The sweetest part was seeing their friends and family so happy to celebrate with the birthday girl. Watching the kids experience a piñata for the first time was just adorable. Thanks Lauren and Jason for letting me bring the monster party to your house! Couldn’t have done it without my husband who helped set up and two pups who were there for entertainment and back rubs! Hope you had a terribly terrific birthday sweet Evie!

I was wondering if you may still have the template for the invitations? I’m wanting to do this for my daughter and can’t find it anywhere!

Hi Hannah, I’m so glad you liked this party! Unfortunately I don’t have the template. Perhaps you can reach out to the designer and see if she’ll be able to make one for you? I’ve updated the link to the original listing. 🙂
