Whip up a batch of these drool-worthy pumpkin pie bites for your dogs!

Every Thanksgiving I try to make my two dogs something reminiscent of a Thanksgiving feast. It usually looks something like this: mashed sweet potatoes, green beans, and a ground turkey patty molded into the shape of turkey. It’s so much fun to see their eyes light up with excitement as I bring them their plates and even MORE FUN to see them gobble it all up! Their feast normally concludes with back shimmying on the carpet and a post-dinner nap.

Seeing my dogs well fed and so happy is one of the joys of being a dog parent. Maybe you feel that way too and it’s why you’re here reading this blog post! With the holidays around the corner, it’s the perfect time to share the tasty joys of the season with your well-deserving pups. These pumpkin pie bites make a great seasonal treat and are so fun to bake! Packed with dog-friendly ingredients like pumpkin, oats, and a hint of cinnamon, they’re nutritious, delicious, and dog-approved!

Let’s bring a little festive cheer to your dog’s bowl this year!

Can Dogs Eat Pumpkin Pie?

Human pumpkin pie is generally NOT safe for dogs as it can contain many ingredients that are toxic and can upset your dog’s stomach. Nutmeg is especially toxic as it can lead to seizures and other fatal symptoms. Read more about the dangers of pumpkin pie here.

This is why I prefer to buy seasonal treats made by reputable pet bakeries OR make my own homemade treats. This way you’ll know EXACTLY what ingredients were included and can be sure they’re safe for your dogs.

What Healthy Ingredients are in these Pumpkin Pie Bites?

Pumpkin

Pumpkin is a low-calorie superfood filled with vitamins and nutrients that support your dog’s eyes, skin and coat. Pumpkin is also rich in prebiotic fiber which can be helpful for digestion. Read more about the benefits of pumpkin here.

Eggs

Eggs are a powerhouse protein that contain all the essential amino acids, vitamins and minerals your dog needs! The amino acids, antioxidants, and choline in eggs support multiple organ systems such as the eyes, brain, and muscular system.

Apples

Apples are a great source of vitamins A and C and pectin. Pectin is a soluble fiber that promotes digestion.

Oats

Oats contain fiber that promote digestion, Vitamin B that keeps dogs’ skin and coat healthy, and minerals that strengthen bones.

Cinnamon

Cinnamon contains compounds that promotes joint health, protects the cardiovascular system, and prevents doggy dementia.

What Kind of Treats Can I Put on the Pumpkin Pie Bites?

You can leave your pumpkin pie bites plain or top them with any treats you have on hand! Some ideas include small cookies, jerkies, dried fish, and fresh berries (blueberries, strawberries).

I topped our pumpkin pies with a daily joint chew from Wuffes. They’re scientifically formulated joint chews designed to boost joint health and slow the progression of canine arthritis. My dogs have been using them for a few months now and look forward to their dinnertime “treat”!

How to Serve Pumpkin Pie Bites to Your Dog

If your dog has a sensitive stomach and has not eaten pumpkin or baked goods before, start by giving him or her a small amount. If your pup seems to like and tolerate it, try giving a larger amount next time. The beauty of these pumpkin pie bites is that you can save them for later in the refrigerator or freezer.

If you have a small dog and are concerned about difficulty eating or choking, consider cutting the pies into smaller bite size pieces before serving.

If you’re going to add a supplement on the pies like I did, be sure to only give your dog the prescribed amount of that supplement. I would advise against using supplements if you’re going to be sharing these pies with other dogs in a social setting as they look like treats and may be inappropriate for some dogs.

Before Starting

Be sure to read the labels on all of the ingredients you’ll be using to make sure they’re safe for dogs. As I mentioned before, sometimes human food products contain ingredients that are toxic to dogs. Double check that you have cinnamon, and NOT nutmeg as they can look very similar.

How To Make Pumpkin Pie Bites for Dogs

1. Preheat Oven to 350°F and Grease Muffin Pan

Use a paper towel and some olive oil to grease the inside of the muffin pan. This will help prevent pies from sticking. If you’re using a silicone muffin pan instead, you can probably skip this step.

2. Mix and Prepare Crust

Prepare the oat flour by blending rolled or steel cut oats in a blender until it forms a powder. In a medium bowl, add the oat flour, egg, and applesauce. Mix until it’s well combined. The crust mixture should be firm enough so that it holds it’s shape. If it’s too dry, add more applesauce. If it’s too wet, add more oat flour. Scoop one tablespoon of the pie crust mixture into each muffin pan cup. Use your fingers to press down the middle to form little wells.

3. Bake Crust at 350°F for 6-8 Minutes

Place the pan in the oven and bake for 6-8 minutes. Baking times can vary depending on your appliance, so periodically check on your crusts while they’re baking. They should be a light brown color when they’re ready.

4. Mix Filling and Fill Pie Crusts

In a small bowl, add the pumpkin purée, egg, and cinnamon. Mix until well combined. Spoon the filling into the wells of the crust until it reaches the top.

5. Bake for 8-10 Minutes

Place the pan back into the oven and bake for another 8-10 minutes until the pie crusts are a golden brown. Allow to cool to room temperature in the pan before carefully removing them with a small spoon.

6. Top with “Whipped Cream” and a Treat

Fill a piping bag with yogurt and attach a decorative tip. I used the Wilton Open Star #22 tip. Feel free to use whichever one want! Pipe a small swirl onto the center of each pie bite, then top with a small treat.

Tip 1: Keep the yogurt refrigerated until this step. The cold temperature helps hold the swirl shape.

Tip 2: If you’re going to refrigerate these for later, add the yogurt swirl and treat right before serving. This way the yogurt swirl will hold it’s shape and the treats won’t discolor the yogurt.

7. Treat Your Pup!

Immediately serve the pies to your pup. See serving tips above for more information.
