Pink and Yellow Lemon Baby Shower

Pink and yellow baby shower place setting featuring lemon plates, pink gingham napkin and homemade lemon curd favors.

A few weeks ago, my friend Jenna and I hosted a lemon themed baby shower for our dear friend Joie! Jenna is the owner and planner at Heart and Arrow Weddings and like me, loves DIY projects and hosting thoughtfully designed events. Joie is a photographer for her self-named brand, Simple Joie Photography. We both met Joie a few years ago through a local creative networking group and we’ve all been good friends ever since. She has also been a mentor to Jenna and I so we wanted to surprise her with a sweet baby shower worthy of her generosity and kindness.

We decided on a lemon themed baby shower since we were hosting it in July. Lemons are in season and add the perfect pop of sunshine-y yellow to any summer party! I loved working with Jenna to dream up all the lemon details from the place settings to the dessert selection to the paper decorations I crafted with my Cricut. There was no shortage of lemons (or DIY projects) at this party!

Location

The baby shower was held at Darcie Kent Estate Winery in their covered patio area. Nestled in Livermore Valley, the winery had panoramic views of wine country and was the perfect backdrop to host an intimate celebration like ours.

Invitation

We downloaded this lemon baby shower invitation template on Etsy. It was so easy to edit and print on our own before mailing to guests! We loved the soft colors and how it set the theme (Pink and yellow! Lemons!) for the baby shower. There is NOTHING we love more than a good themed party!

Joie is the queen of effortless flatlays! She styled our invitation with some of my handmade decorations after the event. Pictured with the invitation are lemon straws, dessert toppers, part of her “Little Lemon” banner, her guest of honor ribbon, and a gift tag…all made by yours truly! Can you believe she hand painted that backdrop?

Food Display

We set up two tables for a self-serve brunch. Guests helped themselves to finger foods, desserts, and beverages. The tables were covered in a pale pink tablecloth and decorated with a custom “Little Lemon” banner I created with my Cricut. I love how handmade banners can serve as shower décor and turn into keepsakes to remind mom of her special day.

Brunch Spread

The brunch spread included a fruit and cheese board, charcuterie skewers, caprese skewers, quiches, and a make your own sandwich bar. All of the food was lovingly prepared by my friends Jenna, Allie and me. Everything was so yummy!

Desserts

For dessert, we served Nothing Bundt Cakes bundtinis (the name makes me giggle!) and lemon bars I made using my mom’s special recipe. To keep with the pink and yellow color scheme, we ordered bundtinis in key lime, white chocolate raspberry, and strawberries and cream. Each bundtini was topped with paper lemon toppers I made and placed on Jenna’s rustic metal cake stands. Can you stand the cuteness?

It was my first time making cupcake toppers I personally designed in Adobe Illustrator, so it was fun seeing the fruits of my labor (pun intended!) on top of these little cakes! I’m considering adding these cut files to my shop. Would you be interested?

Drinks

At the end of the food table was our beverage station. It consisted of a DIY mimosa bar, pink lemonade (of course!), and iced lemon water (similar dispenser here). For the DIY mimosas, guests could choose from a selection of fruit juices paired with Darcie Kent’s sparkling wine. No beverage bar is complete without cute straws (in my opinion!), so I dressed up pink paper straws with more paper lemons. Easy peasy lemon squeezy!

Tip: When planning an outdoor event in the hot summer months, make sure to have a variety of iced beverages to keep your guests hydrated and cool.

Lemon Diaper Cake

At the center of the food table was an adorable three-tiered diaper cake made by Jenna. She loves making custom diaper cakes as decoration for baby showers and gifts for parents-to-be. She found the cutest on-theme blankets to conceal the diapers and the sweet plush was the cherry lemon on top! I squealed with joy when she showed me the inside!

Guest Table

Since Jenna is a wedding planner, she already had a healthy collection of linens and table decorations to choose from. We decided to use pieces from her existing inventory to be sustainable and budget conscious. This challenged us to be EVEN MORE creative!

The existing patio furniture was dark brown and woven. We wanted the guest table to feel more feminine, yet casual so we layered a light pink muslin runner over an ivory chiffon runner. The runners were loosely arranged down the middle of the table, leaving some of the table exposed. We loved how this lightened up the dark table and created an effortless vibe.

Lemon Centerpieces

When searching for ideas on Pinterest, we were inspired by photos of lemons in vases. We decided to put our own twist (yes, I said it!) on this trend! Jenna had a collection of glass cylinder vases in multiple sizes so we used three different sizes for our table. Each vase was filled with a mixture of whole lemons and thickly-cut lemon slices arranged organically. The vases were filled with water before guests arrived for a really refreshing effect! We love how the lemon centerpieces added height and a lot of cheerful color to the tablescape.

Fun fact: Jenna got all of these lemons from her mother and neighbor’s trees and saved a trip to the grocery store!

Lemon centerpieces consisted of whole lemons and lemon slices placed into glass cylinder vases and topped with water.

As a last minute decision we placed a beautiful fruit and pastry tray made by our friend Allie in the center of the table. It was filled with a delectable selection of petite scones, croissants, fresh berries and jams. She has such a talent for arranging bite sized foods and making it look so easy!

Lemon Place Settings

Jenna and I had SO MUCH FUN designing the place settings! In our first planning meeting we discovered that Dollar Tree happened to have these lemon-printed dinner plates and salad plates. They were made of ceramic and cost only $1.25(OMG!!) each so it was a no-brainer we needed them. Jenna placed the order right away to prepare for any shipping delays. Good news – they came in time for the shower!

To break up the lemon pattern on the plates, we wanted some sort of printed napkin. I put myself in charge of finding the perfect napkin, and when I realized they didn’t exist within my budget, I decided to make them – A true crafter move! I found this pink, woven gingham fabric and sewed ten square napkins using this tutorial for guidance. Each napkin was folded into a long rectangle and placed between the two plates for a simple, yet stylish look.

Tip: If you’re going to sew cotton napkins for your next event, be sure to pre-wash your fabric before sewing to minimize shrinking after use.

We LOVE mixing old with new so we finished the place settings with clear, crystal goblets from Jenna’s inventory. We also used her mis-matched collection of silverware displayed in mason jars to add more vintage charm.

Lemon Curd Favors

In case you thought I was done sharing ALL THE THINGS we made, I left the best for last! Jenna and I made our own lemon curd as favors! I love how this pink lemon fabric complemented our lemon plates and pink gingham napkins.

You can find out how I used my Cricut Maker to make the custom labels and jar covers in my lemon curd favors blog post.

Tip: When mixing and matching patterns, pay attention to the scale of the print. Since the lemon plates had a large print, I went for a much smaller print for the jar covers. The pink gingham napkins contrast and complement, but don’t distract from all the lemons in our design.

A Bundle of Joie!

After enjoying our meals, we played a few baby shower games then oohed and ahhed as Joie opened gifts for her baby. Baby girls get the cutest clothes! Can you spot the baby lemon in the shaker gift tag I made her?

We were all so happy to celebrate Joie and her soon-to-be baby girl! Jenna and I had so much fun planning and designing this lemon themed baby shower for her. A special thanks to Allie for coordinating the games and providing her beautifully styled grazing trays!

Joie and her “little lemon” are so loved! Best wishes to Joie as she begins her adventure as a mama of two!
