My Colorful Christmas Home

My colorful Christmas decor helped bring a little joy to our home during this very dreary holiday season. The holidays were very quiet for me and my little family this year. Due to current restrictions and safety precautions, we weren’t able to have any guests over or attend any gatherings. Even though it was just the four of us (me, my husband and our pups, Frankie and Penny) I wanted to make our home feel festive, especially since we would be spending so much of our time here. I reused most of our existing decor (I wanted to avoid crowded shopping areas) and got creative with yarn to make our living room feel merry and bright.

The Color Palette

Recently I was told I am good at curating color palettes. I love unique color combinations, but sometimes that means not being able to find decor I want in the store. That just means I have to MAKE my own decor in MY colors! Last year, I used mostly pinks, mints and teals. This year I incorporated a few more colors. I used an assortment of cotton candy pinks, bright corals, metallic golds, cool mints and teals. A lot of this was achieved by crafting with yarn! By carrying the same color scheme, textures (yarn) and shapes (pom poms) from the tree to the fireplace, I was able to create a cohesive look for our colorful Christmas living room. I especially love how it looks when the lights are on!

Christmas Tree

Check out this post to see last year’s Christmas tree!

For the last few years I’ve stuck with a pink and mint color scheme for our Christmas tree. I already had a bunch of round ball ornaments, shiny brites and novelty ornaments, but wanted to add something else that would make a big statement without a hefty price tag. I love DIY projects and had a bunch of yarn lying around so I decided to make giant pom pom ornaments. Using the largest pom pom maker from this set, I made ten 4 inch pom poms. I’ll admit these took a long time to make, but I love how they add pops of color and whimsy to my tree! The yarn texture is also a nice contrast to all the shiny ornaments I’ve added.

Rainbow Tree Topper

Topping off the tree is a rainbow tree topper I made myself! I looked high and low for the “perfect” tree topper, but when I couldn’t find it I took matters into my own hands. I decided on a rainbow because it’s a symbol of hope (we could all use more after this year right?) and I just plain out love them! To make it, I cut out foam board into a rainbow and clouds shape. Then I wrapped the rainbow section with assorted colors of yarn and added white pom poms for clouds. I love how this piece can nicely transition from a colorful Christmas tree topper to wall art when the holidays are over. I’ll be adding it to my craft room soon!

Did I mention how easy it was to make? You can watch my quick demo below!

Fireplace

The house I grew up in (in Hawaii) didn’t have a fireplace so it’s been a treat to decorate mine each season. Each Christmas I like to reimagine the pieces I’ve collected over the years for a fresh look. This year I added a large gold mirror (I thrifted or $5!) to the center of the mantel. It adds height, a metallic sparkle and as a bonus, reflects a lot of light into our living room! At the center of the mirror are two deer figurines and their “mini mes” in glass globes. I’ve decided they’re representative of my little family! Don’t they look enDEERing here? 😀

Bottle Brush Trees

Surrounding the mirror and deer is my collection of bottle brush trees. I’ve been collecting them for the last several years and am really pleased with the gradient effect I was able to achieve this year. I love how the various tree colors tie in with the deer and garlands I added. My favorite places to find bottle brush trees locally are Target, Hobby Lobby, and Home Goods. I also love shopping Etsy for trees in unique colors handcrafted by talented makers.

Stockings and Stocking Holders

To break up all the colors on top of the mantel I stuck with the cream stockings and white stocking holders we’ve had for a few years now. These cable knit stockings are sold at Target every year and come in regular and mini varieties. They’re a perfect neutral for any Christmas decor and continue to fit right in with my changing tastes. The house stocking holders are also from Target but are no longer sold there. Fun backstory – I actually received them damaged, but decided to spruce them up with white paint and glitter. Now they’re even cuter with the addition of mini wreaths to the fronts!

Garlands

I love garlands, but as I mentioned before, sometimes it’s hard to find exactly what I’m looking for in my color palette. I already had this “Merry and Bright” garland (which I love) but wanted to add something else to the top of the mirror. To complement the felt garland, I decided to make a bunch of pom poms (this took several nights of Netflix!) and string them together. I love how the colors perfectly tie in with the rainbow tree topper I made!

The final piece on the fireplace was a bundle of glittery birch logs I wrapped with matching yarn leftover from the pom pom garland and tree topper. I love how it adds another rainbow element to this space! On the hearth of the fireplace are presents from my Gift Wrap Hacks project and a mint truck I absolutely love.

Throw Pillows

One of my favorite ways to freshen up our living room is with throw pillows. I love using these velvet pillow covers – they make it easy to change up the colors without taking up a lot of storage space. This year I added two statement pillows to the mix – this pink Christmas truck pillow and this tie dye wreath pillow I made myself. I love how they add more personality to my colorful Christmas living room!

Of course good things must come to an end, so we put away our Christmas decorations last weekend. I’m definitely going to miss hanging out in our living room surrounded by all the colorful things I made! Did you make any Christmas decor this year? If you’ve been inspired by my projects or designs, make sure to pin them to your Pinterest board for next year. Happy crafting!
