Emily in Paris-Inspired Camera Phone Dog Toy
This camera phone dog toy is très chic!!
Recently me and my pups were invited to an Emily in Paris birthday party for a little Shih Tzu-mix named Emi! She and her sister Jojo are some of the best dressed dogs on Instagram. Their mom loves the popular Netflix series so much she decided to plan a “Emi in Paris” dog party to celebrate Emi’s 7th birthday. I love how Emi’s name and love for fashion perfectly fit the theme!
If you guys have been following me for a while, you know I LOVE any excuse to craft around a fun theme! I wanted to create something personalized for Emi using one of the photos I took of her and Jojo at my Bark on the Boardwalk exhibit, but couldn’t quite figure out what it would be. After combing through some photos from the show I remembered that the main character, Emily Cooper, is ALWAYS carrying her smart phone that is styled to look like a vintage camera. I thought, “wouldn’t it be so fun to make a dog toy version of her iconic phone?!” And just like that, this genius idea was born!
Last year I used printable fabric to make clip art ornaments, so I decided to use the same technique for this camera phone dog toy. I was rushing to finish this gift on time so didn’t get a chance to grab photos of the process, but hopefully my instructions will give you an idea of how to make something similar! I’m also sharing some super cute store-bought dog toys options (inspired by the show or Paris in general!) just in case you need help finding the perfect gift!

How to Make a Camera Phone Dog Toy Using Printable Fabric

White rope
Hand sewing needle

Instructions
Upload Phone Case Image
First I downloaded a photo of a phone case that looked similar to Emily’s on the show. I uploaded it to Cricut Design Space, removed the background, and then resized it to 6” x 3”. I also added “Emi” to the front of the camera for a personalized touch.
Design Phone Screen Image
I wanted the back of the phone to actually look like a phone screen with an Instagram feed, so I designed it in Canva. To customize the phone screen, I added a photo of Emi and Jojo, their Instagram handle, and the date of Emi’s 7th birthday.
You can access my phone screen template in my Free Stuff Library and customize it with your own special details!
Upload Phone Screen Image to Cricut Design Space
Once I finished designing, I downloaded the image from Canva and I uploaded it to Cricut Design Space. The image should be 6″ x 3″.
Add Offset and Flatten
To both images (the phone case + phone screen) I added a 0.75” offset in white. Then I selected the image and corresponding offset and flattened them to prepare for Print Then Cut.
Print Then Cut Designs
Once my designs were flattened, I clicked the “Make It” button and proceeded with the Print Then Cut prompts. I loaded printable fabric into my printer and followed the instructions on the packaging for print settings. I let the ink dry for a few minutes before loading it onto a mat and into my Cricut machine to cut around the designs. Since both designs didn’t fit on one printable fabric sheet, I had to do this process a total of two times.
Press Fabric Pieces
Once both fabric pieces were cut out, I peeled them off the Cricut mat, then pressed them with my EasyPress Mini on medium for a minute to allow the ink to set.
Sew On Rope Handle
Determine the length of the rope handle and cut to size. Clip the ends of the rope to one of the long edges of the phone case piece. Sew over the rope close to the edge of the fabric, backstitching several times to secure.
Sew Dog Toy
Place the fabric pieces right sides together and hold them together at the edges with clips. (Avoid using pins as they tend to leave holes in the printable fabric). Sew around the edges with a ¼” seam allowance, leaving a 2 inch opening for turning. Flip right sides out through the opening, then stuff with polyester filling. You could add a squeaker if you want the toy to be played with, but this was purely decorative so I didn’t add one. Hand sew the opening with a blind stitch to close it.
Optional: Decorate with ribbon, beaded trim, etc.
Voilà! Your camera dog toy is complete!
What do you think of this printable fabric dog toy project? Have you used Cricut’s Print Then Cut feature in this way before? I can see so many other ways printable fabric can be used to create unique and personalized gifts! If you make something inspired by this, tag me in your photos on Instagram. I would love to see what you create!
