DIY Fall Napkin Rings

Cozy up your Thanksgiving table with these DIY Fall napkin rings!

A few years ago I styled this casual Thanksgiving table just for me and my husband (and two dogs). It was 2020 and we were being extra cautious, so we ordered Thanksgiving takeout (it was delicious!) and stayed in. I still wanted dinner to feel special, so I set the table using an old Nate Berkus x Target runner and some Fall decorations we already owned. Admittedly we’re not really “fancy” people, but I felt like busting out our linen napkins and crafting some matching napkin rings just because!

These DIY Fall napkin rings were inspired by the stripes and colors of the table runner. I don’t really love “traditional” fall colors (oranges and browns are not my jam!), so the mustard yellows and washed out blue-greens were perfect for this laid back look. I used yarn from my craft stash to wrap cardboard rings, then added felt leaves for an extra autumnal touch.

Whether you’re hosting a formal feast or a casual Friendsgiving, these yarn creations add a handmade charm that says, I care—and I craft! Plus, they’re a great way to use up leftover yarn and get your family (or friends) involved in pre-holiday preparations. Grab your yarn, scissors, and a warm drink—let’s get crafting!

1. Cut Cardboard Tubes into Rings

Cut cardboard tube into uniform rings 1.5 inches tall.

2. Wrap the Cardboard Rings in Colored Yarn

Select your yarn color. Cut a length of yarn – longer for larger stripes, shorter for smaller stripes. Take the strand of yarn and attach the end to the inside of the cardboard ring with a small amount of hot glue. Now wrap the yarn around the cardboard ring snuggly together until you get the desired stripe thickness. Cut the yarn and glue the tail onto the inside of the ring.

Repeat this process with the next yarn colors until the whole ring is covered. You can keep the stripes uniform or varied like I did.

3. Make and Decorate Felt Leaves

Cut out leaf shapes from the felt. You can choose any leaf shape you’d like!

Cut a length of wire ~4 inches long. Attach the wire to the back of the leaf with a thin strip of hot glue.

Use glitter glue to decorate the leaves. Allow to dry (at least 4 hours) before proceeding!

4. Add Felt Leaves to Napkin Rings

Wrap the wired end of the felt leaf around the napkin ring to secure it in place.

5. Use Your New Napkin Rings

First fold the linen napkin into quarters. Then take the folded point and pull it through the napkin ring. Tada!

That’s a Wrap!

I really love how these napkin rings tied in with my existing decor! Check out my casual thanksgiving table for more fall table setting ideas.

Other Variations and Ideas

CHOOSE YOUR COLORS – Use yarn in colors that match your tabletop decor!

ADD MORE COLORS – I used 3 yarn colors and brown twine for this project, but you can use as many as your heart desires.

VARY THE STRIPE THICKNESS – Change up the spacing between colors (some thicker, some thinner) for a more interesting look.

MAKE IT SEASONAL – Change up the colors and felt shapes to go with the season or holiday you’re celebrating!

I hope you love this napkin ring project as much as I do! It’s adds so much charm to your place settings and really captures those cozy fall vibes.
